About Derby

Part of the county of Derbyshire and sitting on the River Derwent is the city of Derby. A city rich in history ranging from Roman to Viking and Saxon to the Industrial Revolution and modern day transport engineering. Home to the University of Derby which plays host to almost 30,000 students.

The city is home to the Heights of Abraham, and a number of fantastic mansions and great halls to visit so there is plenty to explore during your time here. Football fans will be able to cheer on Derby County F.C. and those looking for more outdoor adventures will enjoy the city’s proximity to the famous Peak District.

Popular Student Areas of Derby

Allestree

A residential area with some fantastic green spaces. Slightly more remote than some of the other areas mentioned, Allestree is great for accessing the University of Derby and there are still decent transport links to the city centre to enjoy a night out.

Ashbourne Road

A great option for house shares at a good price. Finding larger houses here won’t be a problem. You’ll also have Markeaton Park on your doorstep while being within walking distance of the University.

Buxton

Only really an option for those studying at the Buxton campus. Buxton offers a much smaller town vibe. The town itself is rather picturesque and sits right in the heart of the Peak district, making it easy to enjoy the countryside and some fantastic walks. It’s about an hour from Derby however, so not an option for those who need to be in the city on a regular basis.

City Centre

The city centre offers all the amenities you could need while allowing you to really sink your teeth into everything that Derby has to offer. There is lots of history to explore as well as great green spaces to enjoy. Plus travelling to the university is easy with regular transport options.

Uttoxeter New Road

A large road that heads westward from the city centre with a good range of property options. It’s close enough to the city centre to enjoy the nightlife and amenities Derby has to offer, while still being within easy reach of the university.
