Away from your flat, you’ll find a large, comfortable common room with a pool table and ping pong. An outdoor courtyard gives you space to relax when the sun’s out, while an on-site gym is free to use whenever you like.
When you want to leave the campus bubble, head down the road to Bedford Park for peaceful walks, tennis or relaxing in the summer sun. Feeling a bit more lively? The town centre and riverside areas have a mix of traditional pubs, restaurants and bars to keep you busy.
The town of Bedford is very student friendly, with a large range of modern and diverse venues to keep you entertained through your time at University. Polhill Park is located on campus and is approximately 10 minutes from the town centre, so you will never be far from the action Bedford has to offer.
Bedford has a wide selection of restaurants offering a varied selection of cuisines from around the world, to suit all tastes and budgets. Close to the residence are two pubs, which offer a great food; The Park Public House and The White Horse are 10 minutes walk away and are extremely popular with students.
The high street is located a 20 minute walk from Polhill Park and has an assortment of restaurants including Chinese, Indian, and traditional Italian cuisines. There is also a Nando’s and Pizza Express, which are basically student staples.
The University of Bedfordshire campus have their own canteen to keep you going during lectures with snacks and hot food, alternatively, there is a McDonald’s and a Pizza Hut restaurant – 10/15 minutes walk away.
Bedford’s most popular pubs and bars include; Yates’s and Esquires, and you’ll also have the option to indulge on campus with the pub in the hub. If you’re looking to dance the night away, there is something for everyone in the town centre. Some of Bedford’s most popular venues include Hi-Fi and Empire, all of which have an event on nearly every night of the week.
Bedford is located on the banks of the River Ouse, yet despite the sleepy, picturesque appearance it’s a lively town with a rich heritage. Its calendar of events and festivals which take place during the year make it the perfect destination for students.
There is plenty to see and do, and more than enough to keep you entertained on weekends and between lectures.
If you like the outdoors, The Embankment, alongside the River Ouse is a pedestrian walk stretching for around a mile. The walk meanders through Bedford town centre and across the sites of the town including the well-known Butterfly Bridge.
Bedford Park is an urban park located a 20 minutes’ walk from the residence. It features a cricket pavilion, bandstand, a café, and an outdoor swimming pool. It also contains a football field, basketball and tennis courts, so it’s really perfect for a day out or a game with friends.
If you like to shop, the town itself has a mixture of national chains and independent stores to choose from. There is also a newly developed area called Castle Quarter which has many quaint independent stores. Bedford has always been a medieval market town and recent years it has embraced this and reinvented a large number of markets, so you have plenty of alternative venues for your retail needs. There are a range of stalls in the town centre selling a mixture of fresh food, toys, clothes, cakes and more.
If seeing the latest blockbuster release is your thing, there is a Cineworld cinema which is located a 15 minute walk away, showcasing all the latest films to hit the big screens.
The Higgins Art Gallery & Museum has local history collections on display, and the art gallery has collections of watercolours, drawings, ceramics, glass and prints – the museum is 5 minutes away by car, or a 20 minute walk.
The Bedford Corn Exchange is the biggest entertainment venue in town – just 5 minutes away by car, it plays host to a variety of performances and concerts. The venue has been host to many great entertainers so keep your eye out for your favourite acts.
If you like to keep fit, Polhill Park has its very own gym exclusively for its residents. The gym is open 7 days a week 10am-10pm. Alternatively, there is a Fitness First, 10 minutes walk from the residence, and it includes all the latest fitness equipment, a swimming pool and even a sauna.
Rowing is a major part of the sports scene in Bedford, with regatta events being held throughout the year. Bedford Rowing Club is located just along the road from Polhill Park, where you can join in as a member or just use the great facilities on offer.
Bedford is home to the world’s largest indoor skydiving facility; Body Flight Bedford – 15 minutes by car, where you can learn the sport of body flying in the safety of a vertical wind tunnel. Perfect if you don’t fancy jumping out of a real plane but you still want to get that adrenaline rush!
Bedford International Athletic Stadium is one of the best in the UK and offers a range of outdoor facilities, including; a running track, two rugby pitches and an athletic field all just 15 minutes from Polhill Park.
If you fancy swimming, but with a different feel, try the Oasis Beach Pool, as it’s just 15 minutes’ walk from Polhill Park. There is something for everyone including a wave machine, flumes, outdoor rapids, and even a water cannon. You’ll have so much fun; you won’t want to leave!
Travel and Transport
Bedford is an extremely sought after place to live, given its location; it’s centrally located between London, Oxford and Cambridge. Polhill Park is located on Polhill Avenue on the University of Bedfordshire Campus, and it’s only a 10 minute ride away from the town centre.
Bedford is served by 2 train stations, Bedford Station and Bedford St Johns; both are less than a mile apart. Milton Keynes and London are within easy travelling distance from the town and it takes half an hour or less to get to either city.
Stagecoach serves the local area with bus services; they are reasonably priced with student passes available. The University of Bedfordshire operates a free shuttle bus service Monday – Friday for all students and Polhill Park residents. The shuttle stops at a number of destinations around Bedford, including The University of Bedfordshire campus, Bedford Bus Station, Goldington Road (close to the GP surgery), Bedford Railway Station, Alexander Sports Centre and Sainsbury’s.
Additionally, the X5 is the main bus service which travels through the town East-West, stopping at all the main attractions in Bedford. The service travels through the town centre, Godlington and Elms Farm. For those who live outside of the UK, the nearest Airport for students living in Bedford is Luton Airport, around 30 minutes from Polhill Park. The Airport provides a range of widespread routes across the rest of the UK, Europe and Internationally.
Taxi services in the area are fast and reliable, meaning getting home in the evening can be done safely.
Polhill Park is located near a range of local amenities, making popping to the shops for your weekly essentials a super simple task.
There is a convenience store on campus which is open during lecture hours for everyday necessity items and snacks. In addition to this, there is a Premier Local shop open until late into the evening, located 2 minutes walk away. Furthermore, there is a bakery stocking fresh and wonderful baked goods just a 10 minute walked from Polhill Park.
For a bigger selection of groceries, there are not one but two 24 hour Tesco Supermarkets close by, and both are around a 5 minute taxi ride away.
To encourage local spending in the town, you may purchase gift vouchers which are redeemable in over 200 shops in the town centre. The vouchers are available from the Tourist Information Centre, and come in; £5, £10 and £20.
All high street banks can be found in the town centre, along with a Post Office and Bureau De Change. There is also a cash point located on The University of Bedfordshire campus.
The nearest library to Polhill Park can be found at The University of Bedfordshire – moments walk from the residence. The library has every resource you will need throughout your time at University.
You will be able to receive free confidential advice regarding finances, careers and general welfare when studying at The University of Bedfordshire. Polhill Park is situated on campus so you will never be too far from the help you may need.
Students of The University of Bedfordshire are encouraged to sign up with Goldington Avenue Surgery when they enrol at the University; 15 minutes' walk from Polhill Park.
Alternatively, Putnoe Medical and Walk-in centre is located 10 minutes' walk away for those not registered at a local GP or seeking more urgent medical assistance.
In case of an emergency, Bedford Hospital is a 5 minute drive from the residence in case you need any urgent medical assistance, but we hope you won’t ever need them.
