Do I need a TV License?

The short answer to this question is ‘probably’. If you ever watch any sort of live TV or watch catch-up shows on BBC iPlayer you are required to pay for a yearly TV license.

And they are getting stricter every year when it comes to pursuing non-payers. So if you are someone who watches the occasional live television or enjoys the odd show on the beeb, then you are required to pay your license. Sorry about that. At least you can be safe in the knowledge that you are partly responsible for the next big hit on BBC 2.

What if I don’t own a television? Due to the wide option of online TV services - you still may be required to pay. If you watch any sort of live television online via another device such as laptop or smartphone you will need a license.

What is the definition of live TV? This is any television program that is happening live, or that you recorded while it was being broadcast live. This includes watching television online and on portable devices.

Do I need a TV Licence to watch Amazon, Netflix or Now TV? If you never watch live TV and avoid BBC iPlayer - then you are not actually required to purchase a license. You will have to let them know that you do not require a TV License though, otherwise they will continue to request a payment.

What is the cost? The penalty for not paying a TV license can be up to £1000 so it is preferable to get it sorted. For a whole year you would be required to pay £147.

What if I share a house or flat? If you are renting an individual room and have your own tenancy agreement within a shared house or hall of residence, then you will be required to have your own TV license for your room.

If you are sharing a house under a joint tenancy (find out more about joint tenancy is our guide to tenancy agreements) then you will generally be covered by a single TV license.

What happens if I move? You will need to contact TV Licensing and inform them of the change of address as the license does not automatically follow.
