The area has recently been redeveloped and now houses pubs, bars, restaurants and incredible nightlife. There’s so many places to go to enjoy a ‘night out on the toon’ as the locals say, but you could start with Pitcher and Piano, Slug and Lettuce, The Quayside, or the Baltic Cafe Bar (where the views are truly not to be missed).
Located near Grey's Monument (only a 10 minute walk from Wellington St Plaza), you'll find popular restaurants including The Botanist and Jamie's Italian.
Nightlife in Newcastle is among one of the best in the UK. Music lovers will be in their element with the many live music venues, including The Metro Radio Arena, the O2 Academy and The Sage Music Centre . You could probably find a different concert for every day of the week!
The Gate is a leisure park 10 minutes from Wellington St Plaza. It has 19 venues spread across three floors, including some great bars like Tiger Tiger and Players, open late into the small hours of the morning.
For a sophisticated night, head to Collingwood Street known as the Diamond Strip – 15 minutes from Wellington St Plaza. Here you will find a variety of bars and clubs including Madame Koo, Perdu and Revolution.

If you enjoy sightseeing, take a walk down to the Quayside to see the iconic Millennium Bridge and The Baltic Centre which houses contemporary art. The Quayside has tons of pubs, restaurants, hotels and nightclubs to explore which are perfect to enjoy on a sunny day, or basically any time you need to chill out.
Take a walk to Leazes Park to relax in between and after lectures; it’s ideal for a game of football or Frisbee or even a tasty BBQ with friends in the summer. Even better, it’s just a 20 minute walk away from our student accommodation, so you can save the exercise for when you get there. For even more connections to nature, you need to see the local stretches of beautiful coastline. You absolutely have to check out Whitley Bay and Tynemouth. They can be reached in only 20 minutes on the Metro.
Newcastle is a shopper’s paradise; Eldon Square is 10 minutes’ walk from Wellington St Plaza and is open until 8pm, so there’s no excuse not to grab those last minute bargains for a big night out. There are over 150 shops to choose from, including all the huge high street brand names like John Lewis, Apple, New Look, Topshop and hundreds more. Northumberland Street is the main shopping area, with some quirky individual shops, or you can try the famous Metrocentre in Gateshead, if you fancy venturing a short distance – 20 minutes away by bus.
Newcastle University is recognised as being one of the best universities in the UK for sport. The University offer a scheme called Get Active Newcastle for students through council-run membership schemes to local gyms such as Eldon Leisure. 10 minutes’ walk away is The Centre for Physical Recreation and Sport and offers both performance sport and more casual exercise classes such as aerobics, yoga and dance classes.
For fans of professional sports, St James’ Park – home of world-famous Newcastle United Football Club is a stone's throw away from the residence. Kingston Park Rugby Ground, home of the Newcastle Falcons, is a 20-minute Metro journey away.
The Newcastle Eagles are the most successful British Basketball team in the league and they play their games at Northumbria University, 15 minutes’ walk away.
If you enjoy cricket, take a trip to the neighbourhood city of Durham where they have their famous Durham County Cricket Club, hosting International matches. Better yet, it’s only 20 minutes away by train!
Exhibition Park is 20 minutes’ walk away and holds a weekly Saturday Park Run. It’s free (so no excuses) and it’s a great way to keep fit and socialise with your flatmates.
Travel and Transport
Wellington St Plaza is located on Wellington Street in Gallowgate, a short distance from the Students' Union and Newcastle University campus.
Newcastle’s main train station is 10 minutes’ walk away and provides a quick link to other brilliant places around the UK in all less than 3 hours, including the likes of London, Leeds, Scotland, and Manchester. Additionally, Newcastle has its own Metro system which connects the city centre with Jesmond, Gateshead, Sunderlandand the coast in just under 30 minutes.
There are five stations within walking distance of Wellington St Plaza. The Metro service also has a direct line through Newcastle train station and out to Newcastle Airport for those living abroad; it also links Newcastle to its neighbouring city and friendly rival, Sunderland.
As well as the Metro system and Central train station there are two bus stations, offering cheap fares across the city. If you are feeling really adventurous, catch one of the daily ferries from the International Ferry Terminal at North Shields to Amsterdam.
There are many well-known supermarkets within easy walking distance of Wellington St Plaza, to make popping to the shops for your essentials that little bit easier.
The nearest shop is a Tesco Express, situated next door to the Newcastle Uni Business School, approx. 5 minutes from Wellington St Plaza. There is also a larger Asda at the Adelaide Centre – 5 minutes’ taxi drive from the residence. It’s a good idea to split cab fare between a group of you, to make extra savings. Additionally, if you take a walk further into the city centre, you will find a range of small supermarkets, including Tesco, Waitrose and many more – all preferences are catered to.
There are many high street banks in close proximity to the residence. Northumberland Street is 15 minutes’ walking distance away and has a Lloyds TSB, NatWest and Santander. In addition there is a Barclay’s on Percy Street as well as a HSBC on Grey Street.
If you fancy a takeaway, head on out to Chinatown as it will not disappoint. It’s only a few minutes’ walk from your doorstep and it offers some of the best Chinese food around the UK.
If you are looking for some quiet study time, The Robinson Library is located on University campus and is about 10 minutes walking from Wellington St Plaza. Additionally, the main City Library is approximately 15 minutes’ walk away.
The Newcastle Students' Union has a convenience store with snacks, basic foods and newspapers, a Santander bank and Subway.
You’ll be able to get free help and advice in any areas you need during your time at Newcastle. Whether you’re bothered by your finances, confused by careers or just need some general welfare tips, you won’t be alone. Wellington St Plaza is located close to campus so you will never be too far from the help you may need.
In case of an emergency, The Royal Victoria Infirmary is located 10 minutes’ walk away in the city centre. The hospital has a GP walk-in service which runs alongside its accident and emergency unit. The New Croft Centreoffers sexual health and family planning services and is approximately 10 minutes’ walk from Wellington St Plaza.
